Hear about her experience of continuing his studies with Essex Business School.

What course did you choose to study and why?

I graduated from the University of Essex last year with a Bachelor's degree in BSc Economics. This year, I decided to explore a new field and take on different subjects, so I chose to pursue a postgraduate degree in MSc Business Analytics at Essex Business School.

I chose to study Business Analytics because it uniquely combines traditional business analysis with a strong emphasis on computer science, offering a more challenging and practical approach to solving real-world problems. During my undergraduate studies, I completed several courses in accounting and economics, which align well with the Business Analytics curriculum.

The inclusion of software tools such as R and Excel for data analysis and prediction has enhanced my understanding of data processing and analysis, making my learning experience more efficient and comprehensive. The opportunity to tackle these technical challenges and apply them to business problems is what motivated me to pursue this course.

My favourite module so far has been Applied Statistics and Forecasting. The main reason I enjoyed it was the excellent teaching approach of Dr. Sahar Validi. Her clear explanations and engaging methods helped me fully understand the course material. She also went beyond the syllabus, introducing additional concepts and providing detailed guidance on using the software, which deepened my interest in the subject. Thanks to her instruction and my enthusiasm for the topic, I achieved a score of 90, the highest among all my courses this year.

How do you find your teaching timetable? Do you have a lot of free time?

I really enjoy my teaching timetable! We have great flexibility in choosing optional courses, which makes it easy for students to balance their course load throughout the semesters. I’ve taken a balanced approach by spreading my courses evenly, which keeps my workload manageable and gives me plenty of free time to dive into my personal interests, like playing badminton and doing crafts.

Sure, there are some days when I have two or even three back-to-back lectures, and that can be a bit tiring. But on the bright side, I also have several days each week with no classes! This extra time allows me to explore fun activities, including short trips. Overall, I feel lucky to have such a varied and enjoyable schedule!

How do you spend your free time?

I have actively participated in weekly badminton sessions and volunteer activities as a peer mentor. I regularly join sports activities organised by the Student Union (SU) with a few friends, primarily focusing on badminton. It’s a free activity, with all the necessary equipment provided. I believe these sports activities positively impact both physical and mental well-being. Playing badminton has been a great way for me to recharge and refocus, especially after long days of lectures or intensive essay writing.

As a peer mentor, I’ve been involved in volunteer work, such as assisting with spring registration and helping new students with their concerns about campus life. Through these experiences, I’ve made many friends and significantly improved my communication and problem-solving skills.

Additionally, I often participate in DIY activities organized by the SU, like pumpkin carving during Halloween. These events help foster connections among students and provide a creative outlet, offering a much-needed break from academic pressures. I’ve had a lot of fun at these activities, which have added a healthy balance to my postgraduate experience.
