From Classroom to Boardroom: How Business Analytics Ignited My Tech Leadership Dreams

Among the academic experiences, the Business Analytics for Managers and Entrepreneurs module stands out, offering valuable practical skills like forecasting and AI, made engaging through real-world applications. Here from Zoha about her experience of being a Masters student in Southend.

What encouraged you to come to Essex Business School?

I chose Essex Business School for my master's degree for a few reasons that really stood out to me. First off, their faculty is top-notch, and the programs have a great reputation. I also loved that they balance academic learning with real research experience – that's something I really value.

From day one, I could tell Essex Business School was serious about supporting its students. They start with the fundamentals and build from there, which gave me a lot of confidence. Plus, they're big on using the latest technologies and making sure we can apply what we learn in the real world, especially in analytics, which is my main focus. Moreover, the diverse student body at EBS has been a huge bonus. It's amazing to be surrounded by people from all different backgrounds – it makes learning so much more interesting and collaborative.

What course did you choose to study and why?

With my background in Software Engineering and two years of experience in the tech industry, I decided to pursue a Masters in Business Analytics at EBS's Southend campus. I've always been drawn to the data side of computer science and seeing its growing importance across industries solidified my decision to dive deeper.

Through this program, I've significantly expanded my skillset in data analysis, forecasting, and statistical modelling. I've also gained valuable experience in applying data analytics to research and solving real-world case studies through engaging coursework.

Have you got involved in any sports or societies, what is this like and how do you find it?

I've really enjoyed getting involved with the Students' Union! I've done some volunteer work through them and currently a peer mentor, which has been a great experience so far. Plus, the SU events are always a good laugh! There's always something going on, from game night to cultural events. It's a great way to de-stress and meet new people.

Have you been involved with any volunteering opportunities?

Yes! Few months back, I participated in a beach cleaning activity. It was a great experience - we even got to work with students from the Colchester campus. It was a lot of fun and a fantastic opportunity to meet new people while doing something positive for the environment.

What is the best part about living in Southend?

Southend is a fun place to live, it’s a small city which is about 1 hour away from London so I usually hangout with my friends by traveling across towns or cities. Of course, the beach and arcade are definite highlights of Southend, making it a great place to spend time with friends, whether it's for a meal or a relaxing day by the sea.

I'm really enjoying living in university accommodation, especially because it's so close to everything! It's super convenient being able to roll out of bed and get to class in minutes. Plus, everything is close by - the library, shops, and places to eat.

What has been your favourite module so far and why?

My favourite module so far has been Business Analytics for Managers and Entrepreneurs. The opportunity to develop practical data skills such as forecasting, impact analysis, and AI has been invaluable. Our professor Debabrata’s use of real-world examples was particularly effective in explaining the application of these concepts to practical business challenges. I found that being able to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications made the learning experience both engaging and rewarding.

What are your aspirations after Graduation?

After graduation, I'm really interested on networking with leading companies in the field of business analytics and technology. Ideally, I'd love to secure a business analyst role where I can leverage my analytical skills, perhaps even working towards a leadership position in tech product management.

What advice would you give to others applying to university?

Choosing the right university is a big deal! Don't just follow your friends. Think about what YOU want. What courses are you excited about? Look at what the university offers and how they can support you. Also, it is okay to ask for help, try to seek support from teachers, family and friends regarding the application. Most importantly, try not to get too stressed! It's easy to get caught up in the pressure of applications but remember to take care of yourself and try to enjoy the journey!
