Academic and learning support overview

  • Named adviser in Student Wellbeing and Inclusion Service (SWIS) - You will be allocated a specialist adviser from one of the teams, depending on your primary need, this will either be an Accessibility and Wellbeing Adviser (Disability) or a Wellbeing Adviser (Mental Health). Your named adviser will provide bespoke advice and support on reasonable adjustments.
  • Student support notification - With your permission, your adviser will share information about your disability and support needs with your department and any relevant University services, advising them of reasonable adjustments that have been recommended.
  • Individual exam arrangements - Your adviser will discuss with you and make recommendations for exam arrangements. These might include extra writing time, rest breaks, alternative format, scribes or readers.
  • Marking guidance - For students with Autism/ASC, ADHD or Specific Learning Differences such as Dyslexia or Dyspraxia, sensitive marking guidance will be available to markers for coursework assignments submitted online via our online system FASER
  • Listen Again is the University’s lecture capture and playback service. It records your lectures so you can listen back at a time that is convenient to you. The majority of main lectures for core / compulsory modules are recorded centrally via the Listen Again system.
  • Library assistance is available to students with individual needs
  • Coursework deadlines are published in advance and should give you time to plan and pace your completion of coursework. If you have difficulties submitting coursework by the deadline dates, do discuss this with your specialist adviser so they may consider reasonable adjustments.
  • Departmental Disability Liaison Officers (DDLO) are available in every department, they have knowledge of your subject and course requirements and can make sure that your adjustments are suitable and supportive within the academic setting.
  • Assistive technology software and equipment are available to you in the open access labs on campus.
  • Notetakers may be available if you experience disability related difficulties with independent notetaking and your needs are not met by the Listen Again service, please discuss with your adviser. We may ask you to complete an assessment process with us to help ensure this is the best support for you.
  • Apprentice Learning Support is available for apprenticeship students.
