Undertaking reassessment without attendance means you won’t be able to proceed to your next year of study until you have successfully undertaken your reassessment, which at the earliest would be at the start of the 2025-26 Academic Year. This means you will be classed as ‘intermitting’ and will not be able to attend any classes. Whilst intermitting you will automatically be registered as a partially registered student and will have access to all facilities including MyEssex, your email and the Library.
Reassessments without attendance are undertaken as capped resits, meaning your marks will be capped at 40, unless you have been granted a ‘First Sit’.
In your Board of Examiners outcome email, you may have been offered the opportunity to mix and match your reassessment in the next academic year.
This is due to some of your modules not being available to study part-time next academic year, meaning we were unable to offer you the opportunity to repeat all your failed modules on a part-time basis.
However, where it is possible to repeat some of your failed modules part-time, these will have been listed in your Board of Examiners outcome email.
If you choose to undertake these listed modules on a part-time basis, you will still need to undertake reassessment without attendance in your other failed modules. Before making this decision we strongly advise you read our information on repeating modules on a part-time basis.
If you would like to repeat your available modules on a part-time basis whilst undertaking reassessment without attendance in your other failed modules, please email examboards@essex.ac.uk as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday 2 October to let us know that this is your chosen outcome.
Before selecting this outcome, we urge all students to read the important information below:
You are responsible for checking with your school/department as to whether the syllabus or assessment for the modules you’ll be reassessed in are due to change next Academic Year.
If there are any changes, your school/department will be able to confirm whether you’ll be reassessed on the old or new syllabus.
All reassessment offered in the 2023-24 Academic Year is offered free of charge.
If you need to undertake reassessment in any exams this will be noted on your results page alongside when this examination will take place.
If you are undertaking reassessment in an exam in 2024-25 this will take place alongside the main assessment exam for this module unless you are trailing your reassessment alongside progressing to your next Year of study. Students trailing exam reassessment into their next Academic Year will always undertake this exam reassessment in the January exam period.
Information on when exam timetables will be released and the dates of the exam periods will be updated on the exam dates and timetables page shortly.
If you’re a Final Year student who needs to resubmit Final Year dissertations or projects, please contact your school/department as soon as possible to find out exactly what areas of the project you need to work on for your resubmission.
The Rules of Assessment state that you will not be granted more than three attempts at assessment in a module (the original attempt plus two reassessment attempts) unless you have accepted Extenuating Circumstances. If you fail a module for the third time, and cannot be offered a further attempt, you may have to carry the fail or could be withdrawn from the University.
Despite being a partially registered student, you will still have access to:
As you will be registered as ‘intermitting’ the year, you will not be eligible for a tuition fee loan or maintenance loan from Student Finance England and would need to fund your own living costs.
If you have a place in University accommodation for the next academic year, unfortunately you won’t be allowed to retain it because you’ll be classed as intermitting for the year. To discuss this, and to get your deposit refunded, please contact the Accommodation Office in the Student Services Hub.
If you have a Tier 4 or Student Route visa, please see our immigration webpages to determine what impact your Board of Examiners outcome may have on your visa.
