Stay, play and explore our sensory room

Our sensory room is available for private hire for babies, children and adults.

The room is a lovely small space, tucked away from the main corridor of the Hub and offers a relaxing and/or stimulating environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our therapy team and students are on hand to introduce you to the room and ensure you have everything you need for your session. We can provide lots of specialist equipment and toys, offering a multi-sensory safe space to promote movement, play, sensory stimulation and/or relaxation.

Our specialist equipment includes :

  • Sensory toys
  • A coloured bubble machine with mirrors and fibreoptic lights.
  • Vibrating cushion and body roller
  • Various light projectors (some which have sound features)
  • Bean Bags
  • Banana rocker
  • Massage tools
  • Cause and effect toys (including Henry the Hub Hog!)

We also have a variety of other toys and equipment that can be brought in the room to maximise your experience, such as gym balls, therapy benches, hand puppets, books etc which can be requested via our Hub staff.

Please note that a responsible adult must be always present. A child or young person must not be left alone in sensory room.

Our team of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy staff and students are available to book therapy led sessions. Please email us at healthwellbeingcare@essex.ac.uk for more information on this availability.

Booking Information

Booking times are in place to ensure we have time to clean and prepare the room for the next visitors, so please ensure to arrive on time to enable you to utilise your full session.

Our sensory room can be booked for a 50-minute session by emailing healthwellbeingcare@essex.ac.uk. We do not charge members of the public for hire of the space but instead ask for a donation towards the running of our Hub clinical services, which can be made through our Hubbub donation page.

We recommend the following maximum numbers to ensure each person can gain the most out of their sensory experience:

  • Babies and toddlers – maximum 2 children and 2 adults
  • School aged children – maximum 1 child and 2 adults
  • Adults – this will vary depending on individual needs – please contact us to discuss.

Please note that currently we do not have a hoist or accessible changing facilities. We do have baby changing facilities. Wheelchairs and buggies would need to be stored in an adjacent room during the session.

For local professionals wanting to enquire about partner hire rates, please email to discuss this with us.  We have options for hourly or half day/full day hire of the space and equipment.  Hire rates apply where members of the public are working with independent therapists or practitioners.
