"Essex provided me with the guidance and opportunities I needed to take my first steps toward a career in psychology."
Ambreen Ashfaq, MSc Psychology, now a clinical psychology intern.
I chose the University of Essex because of its strong reputation in psychology, its British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited degree, and the incredible support it offers to students, especially internationals. The diverse and welcoming community, along with excellent career services, made it the perfect place to grow both academically and professionally. Essex provided me with the guidance and opportunities I needed to take my first steps toward a career in psychology.
At the University of Essex, I enjoyed the stimulating and supportive academic environment that encouraged critical thinking and in-depth exploration. The diverse range of modules allowed me to delve into various areas of psychology, with particular enjoyment in subjects like developmental psychology, health psychology, and personality psychology. I appreciated the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research and develop a well-rounded understanding of human behavior, which has been instrumental in shaping my career path.
I enjoyed the diverse and inclusive community at Essex, which made me feel at home as an international student. The strong academic support, career services, and networking opportunities helped me navigate my career path with confidence. Essex offers excellent student support, modern facilities, engaging societies, and vibrant campus life, creating the perfect balance between academics and personal growth.
To current students, I want to say: never hesitate to ask for help. The University of Essex has an incredible support system, but you have to take that first step. Build your network, seek guidance, and embrace every opportunity – because when you believe in your dreams and take action, the future will unfold in ways you never imagined.
“Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.” – Bobby Unser
Since graduating from Essex, my journey has been one of growth, resilience, and discovery. Just a month after arriving in the UK, with the incredible support of my personal tutor and the university’s career team, I secured my first job as a support worker. Their guidance – from resume building to career advice – helped me navigate a system I was unfamiliar with as an international student.
Now, building on that experience, I’ve secured a clinical psychology internship, taking a step closer to my dream of becoming a clinical psychologist. The British Psychological Society accreditation from my degree has opened new doors for me, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.
To current students, I want to say: don’t be afraid to ask for help. Essex has an amazing support system, but the first step is reaching out. Build your network, seek guidance, and embrace every opportunity – because the right connections and courage to take the first step can change everything.
I found my current role through a combination of guidance from my personal tutor and the career support at Essex. Their advice helped me secure my first job as a support worker, which was a crucial step toward pursuing a career in clinical psychology. I recommend reaching out to university support services, especially the career guidance team, and focusing on roles that align with your long-term goals. Building a network on platforms like LinkedIn is also essential, as connecting with alumni and professionals locally will give you invaluable insights into navigating the job market. The more you network, the more opportunities will open up for you.
In the UK psychology job market, a key challenge I face is gaining enough practical experience to move into more specialized roles. While I’ve secured a clinical psychology internship, competition for full-time positions in the field is tough, and gaining experience in clinical settings can take time. Additionally, navigating the visa process adds an extra layer of complexity. However, I’m focusing on building my network and leveraging LinkedIn to connect with professionals who can offer guidance and new opportunities. Persistence and networking are essential in overcoming these challenges.
