Ultrasound mentorship

All of our Musculoskeletal Ultrasound awards are structured to facilitate the development of competent scanning clinicians.

This process requires clinical supervision, access to an appropriate musculoskeletal caseload, and access to at least one suitably qualified mentor.

The inclusion of clinical mentorship and assessment of scanning competency is core to our pathway and an essential component of an award accredited by the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE), for those completing their mentorship in the UK.

Finding a mentor

Students are encouraged to formalise their mentorship arrangements as early as possible, unfortunately accessing high quality ultrasound mentorship in the musculoskeletal specialism can be challenging.

If students do not have a mentor, the University of Essex has links with a healthcare provider who can support musculoskeletal ultrasound students.  Equally, we have variety of international contacts for those completing their mentorship outside of the UK.

Mentorship offered should ensure access to a diverse caseload of NHS, public or private patients, (students would not be scanning normal subjects or peers) and can either be in a musculoskeletal assessment and treatment service, (suitable for physiotherapists, GPs, sports physicians) or in a radiology service, (suitable for sonographers and radiologists).
