We recognise that everyone's personal circumstances are different and perhaps starting your Masters programme in January suits you better than October. That's why we have a range of Masters courses available with a January start. It's part of our commitment to offering flexible study options.

Three reasons to start in January...

1. University accommodation is guaranteed. We can guarantee you'll have a home here on campus if you start in January.

2. Smaller class sizes for a personalised experience.. The January intake is smaller than October so you'll find your classes are smaller, giving you closer contact with your tutors and peers. But dont' worry, you'll still get the chance to mix socially with students from the October intake. The best of both worlds!

3. We care about our students. The annual WhatUni Student Choice Awards ranked Essex as the 7th best Students' Union in the country (for the 5th year running!). These awards are voted for by our students so we're feeling pretty proud.

Why start in January instead of October?

When you choose to start your Masters degree is entirely up to you and what suits your personal needs best. Starting your degree in January may just be more convenient for you than starting in October (which is the traditional time to start a Masters degree at Essex). Whether you begin in October or January, you will qualify with the same degree at the end of your period of study.

Will I still graduate with a full Masters qualification?

Yes, both October and January start dates will enable you to graduate with the same qualification.

Do the January-start courses end at the same time as the October-start courses?

No, if you begin your course in October, your studies will finish the following October. If you start in January, your studies will end the following January. For example, if you start in January 2025, you will complete your course in January 2026.
