We Are Essex

Jesse’s story

Jesse Harrison Lowe, BA Modern History and Politics student, 2018

"I’d like to run my own charity."

I’ve always been interested in politics and how things have changed through time. My parents are very politically aware, and I think they had a massive impact on me growing up. I was always watching the news and asking questions. I think it’s really important for young people to know about politics and current affairs. My work as Deputy Editor of the student magazine Rebel is a great platform for doing this.

I got into writing for Rebel in my second year. I wanted to meet like-minded people who also wanted an outlet to express themselves and I’m lucky that I met loads of great people through it. My role means I’m a point of call for our editors and contributors. I like to help our writers come up with interesting ideas and fresh perspectives on the news and current affairs.

I don’t think there is enough accessible information out there for the youth to understand who they can vote for and what they stand for, and I’d like to help change that. I would like to run my own charity at some point and educate young people on why voting in elections is so important.

What’s the worst that can happen? I’m all about trying new things and pushing yourself to your limits.
