Please note that contract lengths vary in line with course dates. Postgraduate courses are normally 50 weeks and undergraduate courses are normally 42 weeks, however, some courses start earlier or finish later than others.

About University Square

University Square accommodation is perfectly placed to enjoy the many attractions and facilities Southend has to offer. There are seven houses around a central enclosed courtyard and each contain flats for eight to ten students, with shared kitchens.

Room and kitchen details

  • En suite toilet and shower facilities in each bedroom
  • The self-contained apartment has 2 bedrooms, bathroom, living room, and kitchen
  • Typical room size is 15.5ft x 17.5ft
  • Networked internet access at no additional cost
  • Room includes desk, chair, bed, wardrobe, shelving, mirror, lamp, bin
  • Kitchens have a hob and cooker, multiple fridges and freezers, a kettle, and a microwave (a hoover and ironing board also provided for each flat)

Self-contained studio flats 

There is also a selection of self-contained studio flats suitable for either single or couple occupancy, with their own kitchenette and en suite bathroom. The vary in size depending where they are located.

The studios include:

  • Ensuite bathroom
  • Small double bed
  • desk and chair
  • shelving
  • kitchenette (sink, hob, cupboards, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle)
  • Small table

Adapted flats and studios

We offer a number of studio flats adapted for wheelchair users.

Cladding replacement and landscaping works

Work to replace the cladding on the building at University Square, Southend has begun and will be completed by August 2024. Internal landscaping for the podia area, commenced in July 2024 and was due to be completed by December 2024. However, due to unexpected issues beneath the podium surface, the works have now been extended, with a projected end date of 30 April 2025.
 
Everything will be done to mitigate the impact on those living at University Square. Although there will be some noise and disruption during these works, there will be no disturbance during the evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

Should the work noise disturb you, there are alternative study areas available in The Forum and Gateway building.
