A heartfelt goodbye to Stem and Root - but the plant-based love continues!

We have some bittersweet news to share: Stem and Root, our beloved plant-based food and drink outlet on campus, will be closing its doors in January 2025. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re so grateful for all the love and support from our campus community. Whether you’ve dropped by for a quick coffee, nourishing lunch, or just to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, we truly appreciate every moment we’ve shared with you.

What will happen to Stem and Root?

Although Stem and Root will be closing, you’ll still be able to visit and use it as a social space. There’s plenty of room to meet friends for study sessions, colleagues for meetings, and convenient microwaves to heat your own food.

Will I still be able to find my plant-based favourites on campus?

Yes! As we say goodbye to Stem and Root, we’re excited to let you know that Essex Food’s commitment to offering plant-based, delicious meals isn’t going anywhere. As well as still being able to find delicious vegan and vegetarian options at our other outlets across campus, we’re launching a new Canteen lunch menu.

The new Canteen lunch menu will include freshly made, nourishing, and hearty daily dishes including British classics, a pasta dish of the day, burrito of the day, vegan dish of the day, international cuisine, a salad bar, plus plenty of your favourite sides.

More rewards with our Upay app.

We’re also excited to announce that from January 2025, we’ll be adding another rewarding offer on the Upay app. Scan your Upay app at the till to enjoy 10% off any main meal in Canteen. If you haven’t got the Upay app yet, you can download it here..
