Elearning, often referred to as virtual learning or online learning, is the process of learning through digital media and technologies.

It can be anything from a ten-minute quiz on your phone to completing a university degree at a distance. There are numerous elements that can make up an elearning course, including video, quizzes, games, activities, and other interactive elements.

There are two main types of elearning you will come across:

  • Content which is delivered synchronously with live elements (tutor led). This is often called online learning.
  • Content which is completed asynchronously (e.g. LinkedIn Learning). This is often called elearning.

How should I design content for elearning?

The same way you design your normal content. Start by focussing on the learning objectives of the content you are creating rather than the tool you might use. You can use normal design tools (like the ADDIE process) to work out what you should be delivering.

It is important to think about the different learning styles of your students – some will prefer to read text, some video content and some will only want interactive activities. You’ll find a mix of these types of learning will probably suit most of your students.

What are my options for delivering content online?

Moodle already has some integrated tools such as lessons, quizzes, books, boards and forums that can help you create interactive activities for your students. H5P is another free tool that allows you to create quizzes, games, interactive videos and is mobile-friendly. This embeds directly into Moodle and can give more flexibility than inbuilt Moodle tools.

Finally, we have specific elearning software that can be used to create more in-depth activities, and you will have seen examples of this in the How We Work at Essex Booster.
