Assessment is a fundamental aspect of teaching and the curriculum that significantly influences how students learn and what they accomplish. It holds immense power in shaping a student's higher education experience according to Boud (2010).
Given the complexities of diverse student populations, rapidly advancing technology (AI), and the ever-changing educational landscape, assessment raises crucial questions regarding its quality, scalability, sustainability, and effectiveness.
To address these concerns, various assessment strategies, both formative and summative, can be implemented to enhance quality and facilitate authentic and sustainable assessment practices for learning. These can go beyond the more recognised written exams and essays and include more innovative approaches.
Some assessment designs we can find at the University include competency based assessment, negotiated assessments, portfolios, case studies, annotated bibliographies, learning logs, exhibitions, analysis of public data and digital engagement to name a few.
You can find an interesting piece on assessment in the face of AI from Jisc that looks at different approaches to creating authentic assessments.
