Application to fly small unmanned aircrafts (SUA/drones)

This form is to be completed by a member of staff who has a need to fly a drone over University of Essex grounds. The Infrastructure & Environments team requires a minimum of 3 weeks’ notice for a proposed flight. Should insufficient notice be received it is not guaranteed that the flight can be carried out.

All proposed flight submissions must be supported by:

  • a detailed flight plan
  • a suitable and sufficient risk assessment

You will be required to provide the following documents alongside your submission:

  • if you are part of a University of Essex department
    • evidence of insurance
    • confirmation that the person in charge of the flight is competent in line with Health and Safety Standard: Flying SUA.
  • If you are an external organisation:
    • your operations manual
    • evidence of insurance
    • your CAA license

Permission to fly over certain areas (i.e. accommodation, sporting, or commercial areas) will be sought by the Infrastructure & Environments team on your behalf. You must not film people unless you have their permission. You must comply with the University’s requirements for ensuring privacy. It is not permitted to fly over Wivenhoe House Hotel or the Lakeview House.

In submitting this form the flight organiser confirms that the information provided is accurate; the flight date, time and exact location approved will be adhered to; that appropriate insurance for flying a SUA on University of Essex grounds is in place; that they understand and accept that they are responsible for ensuring that the appropriate health and safety precautions are in place and will comply fully with the Health and Safety Standard: Flying SUA.
