Northwest University
Through our jointly developed double degree programme with Northwest University (NWU) and the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Essex (Essex), successful students from NWU will be awarded qualifications from both institutions; a BSc in Electronic Systems Engineering from Essex and a BSc in Electronic Information Science and Technology from NWU.
As a prestigious joint four-year programme, Students will complete the first three years of the programme in China, with Essex staff travelling to Xi’an to deliver month-long modules, followed by online support from the UK.
The partnership between NWU and Essex commenced in 2017 with a joint four-year arrangement involving CSEE. The students are taught in both English and Mandarin, and study 11 modules taught by visiting Essex academic staff before taking their final year at Essex.

CSEE courses are at the forefront of research and teaching at the University of Essex. Throughout our history the School has launched innovative new courses with curricula at the cutting edge of technology. More than two-thirds of our computer science research is 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF 2014)
As a member of our student and research community, students on the joint NWU and Essex programme will benefit from the use of our exceptional laboratories and facilities during the final year of the programme taught at Essex. The School has several computer laboratories that are exclusively for its students and also has a variety of specialist facilities in the areas of brain-computer interfaces, robotics, embedded systems, lasers/photonics and networking.

A joint programme specification outlines the structure of the course and details the modules that will be taught by NWU staff and Essex staff in China in the first three years of the programme. The final year will be taught at Essex.
The module descriptions found within the programme specification provide the content and assessments of the modules delivered at NWU in the first three years of the programme. The module outlines for the final year at Essex align with existing programmes delivered at Essex. Please note that course structures and module information on our webpages may include changes which are due to be introduced for future academic years which may not yet apply to the modules being taught in China.
