How the university supports Knowledge Exchange

There is excellent support available at Essex for colleagues interested in knowledge exchange (KE):

A dedicated Knowledge Exchange Team supporting KE

Each department has a dedicated Knowledge Exchange Manager to advise and support with KE activities. This includes:

  • Identifying opportunities
  • Support to cost projects,
  • Facilitating the internal approvals process
  • Supporting with application documents and proposals.

The Knowledge Exchange Team also offers dedicated support for technology transfer, working closely with academic inventors to identify opportunities for impact and income generation through the commercialisation of research outputs.

Internal Funding Support

Our Enterprise Project Fund (EPF) is an internal knowledge exchange funding scheme for our academics, research staff and technicians.

It provides funding to support engagement with potential clients and partners and facilitates the commercial development and application of our research and expertise outside the University.

This is an annual fund, with a call for applications in the spring or summer.

External engagement with industry to develop KE partnerships

The Business Engagement team outreach to external businesses and organisations to proactively develop collaborations between industry and Essex expertise, based on the partner’s innovation challenge.

The team includes dedicated support to deliver Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and other innovation partnerships funded via UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) funding calls.

From scoping projects, application support to winning grants, talent recruitment and project management, the team offers full lifecycle support to academics and industry partners.
